They adjusted almost immediately.
Ashley is a little more defiant. However, with a firm tone she listens.

The leash provided (2 in 1 leash) did not work. Tula likes to walk on the grass and Ashley only likes to walk on the grass when she wants to. After the first time I walked them I stopped using the 2 in 1 and provided them with separate retractable leashes which work very well.

Overall: Very easy and fun

The thicker the coat, the more difficult it is the trim. It is always easier to shave as short as possible. The longer the length of the style, the more time consuming and difficult.

Because pebbles has white skin and black hair, shaving too short results in visibility of the skin through the coat. To avoid this she was shaved 9mm all over the body.
Her extremely thick curly coat made this more challenging, but her prefect behavior made up for it.
1/5 unneutered female dogs develop diabetes when they're older…

I knew something was wrong when Bear peed in the house… Not just a little pee, but a big puddle. She was drinking a lot of water and even though she was eating like crazy & always hungry, she lost 2 kilos in 1 month. These are all the initial symptoms on diabetes.
A few days later things changed abruptly… Bear went from playful and energetic to weak and sickly overnight. This was when I took her to the vet.
Having never been neutered, Bear was diagnosed with diabetes.
The only way to manage this is to remove the ovaries (hormones) so the blood levels can be regulated.

Bear was too weak to operate when she was diagnosed. Therefore we waited til today (36 hours later) to do the operation, hoping she would be she would get stronger…
Obviously we would never be able to get her completely strong while she still has her ovaries, but we got her as strong as possible.

The operation itself is not that risky. The first risk (after operating risks) is the fact that she is not young anymore. At 9 years old, she still has 6-9 years to live… but with operations, it is a risk.
The biggest risk is the diabetes. Keeping the levels right during an operation leads to greater risk of complications and death. Another risk was the fact that she went into the operation in a weaker state.

On operation morning there were only slight improvements. Nevertheless taking more time to try to get her stronger outweighed the risk of operating in the current state.

Continued: Bear is at home now :)

They removed the ovaries (as planned) and decided to remove the uterus as a precaution.
Bear is still very sick and weak, as her glucose is still really high from the diabetes. She is also weak and in pain from the operation. She is still considered critical because now that her hormones wont be interfering with her glucose levels, it is possible that they shift too much.
I will monitor her throughout the night until we go back to the vet in the morning.
-We have a long road ahead to recover and stabilize the levels; but we are on the side of this.
If there are no complications through the night (after she gets insulin), than she is expected to be ok. Once we stabilize the levels she can live a long happy life.

Now that we have got past the scariest part of this, I feel really good about everything. Once she recovers and we get the diabetes under control, Bear can live out her full life… happy & comfortably. The whole thing is EXTREMELY expensive. The vet said that if you cannot afford it, we should kill her (as death from diabetes is very painful). This was something I could not even consider… I would rather pay for even if she died in the operation, I would still have rather done everything to save her, than decide that the price tag on her life is too high… A couple thousand for another 5-9 years with Bear is not that much. People purchase dogs that have a 12 year life span for the same amount…I don't know how I am going to do it, but I am so glad I did.As pet parents, it is our responsibility to do what is best for our pets and do everything we can. To all those who advised me to give up & kill my dog: (Let me put it nicely…) "You probably should never take on the responsibility of pets"To those who are supportive: "Thanks so much… Bear also appreciates your support & wishing her well."

Not used to getting injections, Bear is pretty fussy with the process. I try to do it as fast as possible, but she has lost so much weight, that finding a good place to inject takes a minute.

I try to tell myself that she is just being dramatic… that this is no different that the way she acts when I cut her nails… but there is just something about holding the needle in your hand and sticking it into her. The process is something that takes a little time to get used to (especially when it is with your own dog).

As time passed after Bear finished her meal, the pressure to give the injection becomes enormouse. Because things didn't go well the previous times, my nerves got the best of me. Of course, my nerves also got the best of Bear.

As a result she missed her injection 1-2 times in a row. Both times I tried to give it, but when she flinched the needle came out. There was still 1 unit of insulin the syringe, and I couldn't say whether or not she got the rest (so I could not give more).

As the day progressed, I could tell be how much water she was drinking that the insulin did not go in.

Because the insulin was irregular, we had to postpone the vet appointment.

The stress from the difficult times carries over to the next time.

When I got help, I was able to get my confidence back. Bear has been getting her injections consistently for the last 4-5 days.

Our appointment is tomorrow.

I expect that she needs a higher dose of insulin. Nevertheless, I can see progress all the time.

Ruben is doing well…

During the previous meet-and-greet, Ruben appeared to be right at home and warmed up to me immediately. On intake day, Ruben got a little tense when I touched his ear.

Since then, we have been getting along great.

He is a more work than expected..

His aggressive nature towards other dogs prevents him from being in included in all the destination outings and playtime (when another dog is present).

Appetite is excellent. I motivated him to eat with wet food and it took off from there.
Due to his unusual medical condition, giving him sips of water frequently throughout the day has been going fine. (Although he did vomit once)

As a result of the aggression and providing small sips of water frequently throughout the day, Ruben is better suited for a private/ preferential reservation. That way he can enjoy private destination outings and avoid being separated when another dog comes (for boarding, day-care, grooming, etc)

OVERALL STATUS:

Ruben has made himself at home. He is getting all the attention and care he needs. Unaware of the things he is missing, Ruben is having a great time.

Puppy Grooming

Sven's First Trim

Sven is a 7 month old, male, semi-hypoalergetic mixed breed.

Sven's first trim

Because Sven was recently recovering from being neutered, the owner was not able to keep up the brushing maintenance which resulted in a very serious case of matting from head to toe.

Being a puppy, Sven was very hyper and disobedient (as he is had never been groomed or fully trained yet). His quick, unpredictable movements made cutting out the matts on the skin quite difficult.
Several matts were so close to the skin that I had to use the shortest shaving size to remove them (safely). This resulted in a couple bald patches on his side. If the white skin didn't show through a close shave, I would have shaved Sven shorter to address the matting faster and easier.

4mm was the shortest I could trim him without seeing the white skin through the black coat.
This meant that while tending to his puppy behavior, I had to cut out every matt before brushing and trimming (while maintaining a positive grooming experience).

About 10 minutes into the process, I decided that this grooming appointment would be mostly about the experience and comfort and less about the style. The only styling I focussed on was saving 4mm of length as much as possible.

Sven also had a lot of hair growing out of the ears. Unlike most puppies, Sven allowed me to pull out the ear hair without a problem.

To help rejuvenate the dry, irritated skin resulted from the matting, I used a puppy shampoo and oil replenishing conditioner and lotion.

Puppy Grooming

Brushing & Matting

Puppies have a much softer lighter coat. As they get older, the adult coat grows in and the lose their puppy fur. Because of this transformation, it is extremely important to keep up with brushing.
This is even more important with hypoallergenic breeds (like Sven and poodles) because they don't shed their coat. Puppies that don't lose their fur get matted and tangled very easily. Because their fur can grow infinitely, matts can form directly on the skin causing tension, dryness and irritation of the skin.
The irritation causes the dog to scratch and roll around collecting dirt in the matts. Bacteria close to irritated skin leads to greater discomfort which makes it very difficult to brush the dog.

Thin, fluffy puppy fur tangles even easier, especially when the adult coat starts to grow in.
untrained, curious, & playful, brushing a puppy can be quite a challenge. Teething makes them want to bite everything… Nevertheless, it is extremely important to keep up with brushing.
Not only does puppy fur tangle easier than adult fur… puppy skin is also thiner, looser, and more susceptible to irritation & discomfort.
De tangling a puppy's cut is a lot more difficult. Not only is the puppy curious, biting, untrained and playful, it is also not used to basic brushing and let alone, detangling & grooming.
With matting close to the loose, dry, irritated skin; cutting out the tangles is also very difficult (regardless of the obstacles associated with puppy behavior).

Loose puppy skin can easily get nicked by grooming clippers and cut by scissors. This contributes to all the challenges of detangling & grooming a matted puppy. Irritated puppy skin can also get ripped by trying to brush out matts close to the skin.

It is really important that puppies have a positive grooming experience. Especially breeds that require regular grooming. A puppy that is brushed by the owner is groomed much faster. It is also a lot more comfortable and easier allowing the groomer to focus on positively interacting with the pup.
Grooming a matted puppy has to be done very carefully and takes a long time. The groomer has to focus more on cutting out the matts with as little pain as possible. Instead on interacting positively with the pup, the groomer has to focus on restraining and safety. Not only does the puppy have to withstand being groomed by a stranger, it is also unfamiliar with the brushing and other grooming tools.
Status Update: Kouja

With Daycare 4 days a week, it is no surprise that Kouja is one of the more popular HH Pack members.

She may be small in size, but her energy, character, and behavior carry a large presence.

Being in excellent condition, Kouja is the only small HH-dog that gets to attend the fitness pack outings for large/ fit dogs. Kouja effortlessly keeps up with 90min endurance outings on the beach/ forest. She runs after the ball with the group (even though she is not interested in the ball at all).

Kouja wont play fetch with you, but she will play "kill the cute cuddle toy"

Sweet as she is to the members of the HH pack, Kouja is not always nice to dogs outside the pack.

Kouja has become best friends with Bear.

With Bear's illness and operation happening over the past week, Kouja mellowed out and was extra sweet, gentle and sensitive. She is very intuitive and caring…. it was nice to have around during these last few days of stress and waiting.

Grooming Tip:

Maintenance Paws & Nails

The paws are very sensitive, especially between the paw pads. To help your dog be more comfortable with paw maintenance (trimming, nails, etc), stimulate the areas between the paw pads to help your dog get used to contact in these sensitive areas.

Fur growing between the paw pads must be kept short. The fur not only collects dirt, but it also can eliminate traction and reduce the sense of touch. Fur growing over the paw pads is like wearing socks all the time which can cause the dog to slip on slick surfaces.

Fur between the paw pads can get matted and collect gum and other matting material. This can become extremely uncomfortable for the dog.

Dog's nails are filed automatically by walking on rough surfaces (sidewalk/ street). Long fur on the underside of the paw prevents the natural filing of the claws. Claws should be kept short for safety and comfort.

Becasue black claws can only by trimmed by a professional or someone with experience, it is I recommend intentionally walking the dog on rough surfaces to promote the natural filing of the claws that can become extremely uncomfortable & even painful for a dog.must be kept short.

Groom Example Minty (mix)

Being a unique mix, Minty's coat is combination of different types of fur and hair that is extremely think. Some sections are thicker and curlier than others, resulting is this cute, fluffy little dog/cloud that is quite difficult to trim.

Request: No special styling, only a short trim, 1 length, not too short.

The first time I groomed Minty was the first time we was ever groomed. When he was a puppy.

After HH Grooming
Finished with a bow

Since then, Minty has become much bigger and much much fluffier.

Grooming Tip:

It is always important to make grooming as much of a positive experience as possible. This is especially important with puppies.

I was happy to see that Minty was not a difficult dog when it comes to being groomed.
With is shy nature, I was surprised by how comfortable he became as the session progressed.
She started out a little shy & gaurded… intelligent as she is; once I had a little talk with her and explained what was going on, she was OK (crazy as it sounds…)

After the first night she let her guard down and warmed up to the environment.

Due to her injury, she is getting private walks throughout the day.
I have seen her limp a little on night 2 (after the last walk of the day). By morning she was walking fine again.
She does not appear to be in any pain… she would run if I allowed her to.
In the effort to heal the injury, we are keeping the energy mellow… She is resting her foot while relaxing and receiving plenty of attention and affection.

Pet-Sitting Status Update

The puppies are doing great!

They spend most of the time sleeping (as expected)… They even fall asleep while eating.
They are not at all bothered by the change of environment or new people.
The two larger, healthier pups are a lot more active than the one that is ill. They are very curious and like exploring their room.
They both have a healthy appetite and wake up for every feeding.

Energy & bevavior are positive… what you would expect from a puppy.

Intensive Care Puppy Boarding with Special Needs

The little puppy is still more lathargic than the others and sleeps a lot deeper… If I don't wake him for feeding he would probably sleep through it completely.

The midnight and early morning feeding/medicine is probably harder on me than it is on them.

Giving the medication and monitoring his temperature is no problem. He hardly even wakes up for it.
His temperature has been consist since he arrived and he is eating and keeping it down.

His gums appear to be getting pinker and he is starting to walk around more and more when he is awake (which is a really good sign).
When he walks around, his brother and sister try to play with him a little to much… I may have to isolate him for part of the day for some peace and quiet.

OVERALL: The pups are doing as well as can be expected and cute as can be.
Because the owner is growing out Molly's coat; the focus of the appointment was to trim the coat to stimulate growth and create a healthier more vibrant look.

To stimulate growth, all the fur was slightly trimmed.

For a more vibrant youthful appearance, the face was trimmed into the teddybear style.
This style is very popular with Yorkshire Terriers.
The aim of the teddybear face is fluffy fur styled into a round or heart-shaped frame surrounding the face. The thicker and fuller the coat, the better the teddybear style.

Molly Yorkie grooming

Taking more length off the head, would result in a fuller 'teddybear' style; however, Molly looks much cuter in her accessories- which are less applicable with shorter fur.

Compared to short coats, longer coats can quickly appear flat and dull.

The longest sections of the coats are not only the oldest; the have also been through the most wear and tear (brushing, washing, etc.) They are also the most exposed and get the least nutrients from the body (sin oils, etc).

To bring back the shine we used a shampoo and conditioner that help rejuvenate the natural oils in the skin and coat.
We also did an oil treatment the seal the natural skin and coat oils into the fur.

Hollywood Honden Services Grooming Tip:

Watch out for 'shine' shampoos & conditioners. Many of these products use chemicals that bring out the shine immediately but also eliminate the natural shine oils in the coat and skin.

Do not shampoo your dog too often… bathing with shampoo and/or conditioner should be done as little as possible. You dont need shampoo to rinse off sand from the beach, just use water. If you regularly need to bathe your dog, use natural shampoos and/or oil replenishing shampoo/ conditioner.

Styling was completed with a magenta bow, fastened to the fur between the ears.

Grooming: Status Follow-Up

Molly arrived to the appointment shaking and quite tense…
Once we settled in together, Molly quickly turned around into being a hyper, playful, energetic dog…
She was the perfect grooming client. She didn't mind the grooming tools, she sat still, she obeyed commands, and was comfortable and trusting.
The bath was her least favorite part, but she was more annoyed than scared.
Knowing she hates the cold… Molly was bundled up immediately and then blow-dried.
Her only struggle was taking good photos… but we even accomplished that after a few tries.

Overall: Molly warmed up to me much faster than i would have ever expected. I was pleasantly suprised with how happy & comfortable she was without the owner.

Loosely sticking to traditional Westie styling…
Oscar's body is the shortest down the center of the back. His sides are layered longer creating the appearance of the Westie skirt.
The skirt hangs about 2 inches off the body (under the ribcage). Instead of keeping the long fur under the entire ribcage, the underside of the dog is trimmed short for better upkeep. Only the outermost underside is kept long, like a tablecloth.

The chest trimmed blending into the shoulders.

The head and face have a squared off teddybear style (difficult to see in this photo because the dog's face is damp).
