Boarding Tula And Ashley

Dog Boarding Update

Pet Sitting, Tula & Ashley

HH Dog Sitting, Leiden (Status Update)
New Pack members, Tula (Jack Russell) and Ashley (Schnauzer Mix) are doing great.

Appetite and energy is excellent
Ashley
They adjusted almost immediately.
Ashley is a little more defiant. However, with a firm tone she listens.

The leash provided (2 in 1 leash) did not work. Tula likes to walk on the grass and Ashley only likes to walk on the grass when she wants to. After the first time I walked them I stopped using the 2 in 1 and provided them with separate retractable leashes which work very well.

Overall: Very easy and fun

Labradoodle Grooming

The thicker the coat, the more difficult it is the trim. It is always easier to shave as short as possible. The longer the length of the style, the more time consuming and difficult.

Because pebbles has white skin and black hair, shaving too short results in visibility of the skin through the coat. To avoid this she was shaved 9mm all over the body.
Her extremely thick curly coat made this more challenging, but her prefect behavior made up for it.

Chani: Update

Pet-Sitting Status Update

Husky, Chani

Chani & Bear

Chani was a pleasure as always…
She attended a Hollywood Honden Outing to the beach.
Even though she had to stay on-leash, she still had a great time.

She got along very well with my dog Bear.
With Bear being ill, Chani was very gentle with her.

Appetite could have been better…
As expected, she did not eat all her food.
Energy, behavior, and temperament were EXCELLENT

OVERALL: A joy to have around

Ruben: Update

New Hollywood Hondje: Ruben

Boarding, Status Update

Ruben is doing well…
During the previous meet-and-greet, Ruben appeared to be right at home and warmed up to me immediately. On intake day, Ruben got a little tense when I touched his ear.
Since then, we have been getting along great.

He is a more work than expected..
His aggressive nature towards other dogs prevents him from being in included in all the destination outings and playtime (when another dog is present).

Appetite is excellent. I motivated him to eat with wet food and it took off from there.
Due to his unusual medical condition, giving him sips of water frequently throughout the day has been going fine. (Although he did vomit once)

As a result of the aggression and providing small sips of water frequently throughout the day, Ruben is better suited for a private/ preferential reservation. That way he can enjoy private destination outings and avoid being separated when another dog comes (for boarding, day-care, grooming, etc)

OVERALL STATUS:

Ruben has made himself at home. He is getting all the attention and care he needs. Unaware of the things he is missing, Ruben is having a great time.

Puppy's First Trim

Puppy Grooming

Sven's First Trim

Sven is a 7 month old, male, semi-hypoalergetic mixed breed.
Sven's first trim
Because Sven was recently recovering from being neutered, the owner was not able to keep up the brushing maintenance which resulted in a very serious case of matting from head to toe.

Being a puppy, Sven was very hyper and disobedient (as he is had never been groomed or fully trained yet). His quick, unpredictable movements made cutting out the matts on the skin quite difficult.
Several matts were so close to the skin that I had to use the shortest shaving size to remove them (safely). This resulted in a couple bald patches on his side. If the white skin didn't show through a close shave, I would have shaved Sven shorter to address the matting faster and easier.

4mm was the shortest I could trim him without seeing the white skin through the black coat.
This meant that while tending to his puppy behavior, I had to cut out every matt before brushing and trimming (while maintaining a positive grooming experience).

About 10 minutes into the process, I decided that this grooming appointment would be mostly about the experience and comfort and less about the style. The only styling I focussed on was saving 4mm of length as much as possible.

Sven also had a lot of hair growing out of the ears. Unlike most puppies, Sven allowed me to pull out the ear hair without a problem.

To help rejuvenate the dry, irritated skin resulted from the matting, I used a puppy shampoo and oil replenishing conditioner and lotion.

Puppy Grooming

Brushing & Matting

Puppies have a much softer lighter coat. As they get older, the adult coat grows in and the lose their puppy fur. Because of this transformation, it is extremely important to keep up with brushing.
This is even more important with hypoallergenic breeds (like Sven and poodles) because they don't shed their coat. Puppies that don't lose their fur get matted and tangled  very easily. Because their fur can grow infinitely, matts can form directly on the skin causing tension, dryness and irritation of the skin.
The irritation causes the dog to scratch and roll around collecting dirt in the matts. Bacteria close to irritated skin leads to greater discomfort which makes it very difficult to brush the dog.

Thin, fluffy puppy fur tangles even easier, especially when the adult coat starts to grow in.
untrained, curious, & playful, brushing a puppy can be quite a challenge. Teething makes them want to bite everything… Nevertheless, it is extremely important to keep up with brushing.
Not only does puppy fur tangle easier than adult fur… puppy skin is also thiner, looser, and more susceptible to irritation & discomfort.
De tangling a puppy's cut is a lot more difficult. Not only is the puppy curious, biting, untrained and playful, it is also not used to basic brushing and let alone, detangling & grooming.
With matting close to the loose, dry, irritated skin; cutting out the tangles is also very difficult (regardless of the obstacles associated with puppy behavior).

Loose puppy skin can easily get nicked by grooming clippers and cut by scissors. This contributes to all the challenges of detangling & grooming a matted puppy.  Irritated puppy skin can also get ripped by trying to brush out matts close to the skin.

It is really important that puppies have a positive grooming experience. Especially breeds that require regular grooming. A puppy that is brushed by the owner is groomed much faster. It is also a lot more comfortable and easier allowing the groomer to focus on positively interacting with the pup.
Grooming a matted puppy has to be done very carefully and takes a long time. The groomer has to focus more on cutting out the matts with as little pain as possible. Instead on interacting positively with the pup, the groomer has to focus on restraining and safety. Not only does the puppy have to withstand being groomed by a stranger, it is also unfamiliar with the brushing and other grooming tools.

Puppy Grooming Tips:

  • keep up with brushing maintenance to familiarize your dog with brushing
  • Have your dog groomed and trimmed before any operation
  • Cut out matted fur to avoid matting on the skin, irritation, and discomfort.
  • Get a puppy/dog you can care for (check what maintenance the dog requires before getting it)
  • Get your puppy groomed early; before adult coat has grown in

Dog Daycare: Kouja

Doggy DayCare, Leiden

Doggy-Day-Care, Leiden
Hollywood Hondenservices, Zuid Holland

Status Update: Kouja

With Daycare 4 days a week, it is no surprise that Kouja is one of the more popular HH Pack members.
She may be small in size, but her energy, character, and behavior carry a large presence.
Being in excellent condition, Kouja is the only small HH-dog that gets to attend the fitness pack outings for large/ fit dogs. Kouja effortlessly keeps up with 90min endurance outings on the beach/ forest. She runs after the ball with the group (even though she is not interested in the ball at all).

Kouja wont play fetch with you, but she will play "kill the cute cuddle toy"

Sweet as she is to the members of the HH pack, Kouja is not always nice to dogs outside the pack.

Kouja has become best friends with Bear.
With Bear's illness and operation happening over the past week, Kouja mellowed out and was extra sweet, gentle and sensitive. She is very intuitive and caring…. it was nice to have around during these last few days of stress and waiting.

Grooming Minty (Mix)

Minty Before and After HH Grooming

Groom Example Minty (mix)

Being a unique mix, Minty's coat is combination of different types of fur and hair that is extremely think. Some sections are thicker and curlier than others, resulting is this cute, fluffy little dog/cloud that is quite difficult to trim.

Request: No special styling, only a short trim, 1 length, not too short.

The first time I groomed Minty was the first time we was ever groomed. When he was a puppy.
After HH Grooming
Finished with a bow
Since then, Minty has become much bigger and much much fluffier.

Grooming Tip:

It is always important to make grooming as much of a positive experience as possible. This is especially important with puppies.

I was happy to see that Minty was not a difficult dog when it comes to being groomed.
With is shy nature, I was surprised  by how comfortable he became as the session progressed.

Grooming Recommendation: Shave really short for summer.

Update: Chani

Special Needs Boarding: Status Update

Chani, Siberian Husky, female

Chani is doing great!

She started out a little shy & gaurded… intelligent as she is; once I had a little talk with her and explained what was going on, she was OK (crazy as it sounds…)
Special Needs Boarding
Status Update: Chani

After the first night she let her guard down and warmed up to the environment.

Due to her injury, she is getting private walks throughout the day.
I have seen her limp a little on night 2 (after the last walk of the day). By morning she was walking fine again.
She does not appear to be in any pain… she would run if I allowed her to.
In the effort to heal the injury, we are keeping the energy mellow… She is resting her foot while relaxing and receiving plenty of attention and affection.

Behavior is Excellent. She able to communicate and very intuitive. She is in sync with what is expected of her… very few commands are needed.
I love how she helps put on her harness…
She has been taking her medication without a problem
Feeding is fine…
Energy is OK. She wants to do more but can't while she is recovering the leg.
OVERALL: an absolute joy to have around

Grooming Yorkie (Molly)

Trimming a Yorkshire Terrier

Hollywood Hondentrimmer, Leiden

Maintenance Grooming Appointment for a Yorkie, Molly.

Yorkshire Terrier Grooming example.
Hollywood Hondentrimmer, Leiden
Because the owner is growing out Molly's coat; the focus of the appointment was to trim the coat to stimulate growth and create a healthier more vibrant look.

To stimulate growth, all the fur was slightly trimmed.

For a more vibrant youthful appearance, the face was trimmed into the teddybear style.
This style is very popular with Yorkshire Terriers.
The aim of the teddybear face is fluffy fur styled into a round or heart-shaped frame surrounding the face. The thicker and fuller the coat, the better the teddybear style.
